Food // Koop, Bold Street

Recently I had half an hour to kill before I attended an event and I found myself on Bold Street with a slightly rumbling tummy. If you’re local to the city you’ll know Bold St is the place to find the latest eateries and the most tried and tested options too.  I noticed Koop is available as an option on Colu, accepting the Liverpool Pound and seeing as my app is still loaded up, I thought why not give it a whirl! Firstly I was struck by the interiors. Quite a small, narrow restaurant with tables either side but neon signs on the wall – chicken themed obvs and an exposed kitchen so you can see the chefs cooking. The menu has a few different options – burgers, wraps, salads and sides. I went for the chicken thigh burger and a side of sweet potato wedges.  And here’s where it went downhill. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t wowed by the food. The wedges I could have made at home. Quite easily. They weren’t crispy at …

Liv Organic Food Market - Review

Food // Organic Food Market – Bold Street

One thing I love about being a blogger in Liverpool is the diversity in events and the opportunities that knock every once in a while. Known for its independent restaurants, great bars and diversity when it comes to dining; the introduction of a new organic food market on Bold Street was welcomed with open arms! Encouraging city dwellers and the average Joe give a vegetarian or vegan diet a go, the food market which opened recently is Liverpool’s answer to Whole Foods. Always one to stay ahead of the curve, Bold Street is the perfect location and when I received an invite to pop along to the launch night, how could I refuse! Complete with a fruit and veg market, deli counter, store cupboard aisles and even health and beauty products; all vegetarian and vegan friendly, the Liv Food Market is a welcome addition. After a slight confusion over the event time, we were welcomed into the market and given the opportunity to browse the aisles, take those all-important Instagram snaps and sample a couple …

Fashion // Met Quarter Xmas Preview

The big C isn’t too far away so now’s the time to start getting excited, planning when to decorate the tree and discover just how many presents you need. Or, it’s a time to starting thinking about what to add to your own wishlist to unwrap on the 25th December! Back in October, I was invited along to attend the Met Quarter press day to have a sneaky peek at their upcoming Christmas stock! The Met Quarter is a luxury shopping centre based in the centre of Liverpool, but sadly it’s one I very rarely venture too. With a variety of high street and designer brands housed under one stylish roof, I was excited to see what MAC Cosmetics were planning to release in time for Christmas and has a nosey at the pop-up shop so I could just imagine actually buying a new sofa and you know, furniture that actually matches for my house… Anyway, back to the event! I arrived at the showroom space in the Met Quarter to be greeted by the PR …

Life // Down On Cedar Farm

Last weekend a friend and I decided to take advantage of the lovely weather we’re being treated to and pay a visit to Cedar Farm. Located in-between Ormskirk & Preston, it’s tucked away in the countryside surrounded by fields. Perfect when you want to escape the hustle and bustle! We both enjoyed a delicious goats cheese bagel with wedges. The food was simply delicious and sitting outside in the courtyward was a lovely way to spend a Sunday. Cedar Farm has an assortment of attractions – a petting farm complete with goats and sheep, an art gallery, cutesy style shops and the cafe where we ate. I would definitely recommend a visit if you’re in the area!

Drinks // Be At One, Liverpool, Launch Party

Last week I dusted off my dancing shoes and headed to the luxurious Be At One launch party. A stylish new cocktail bar based on Seel Street; it was easy to see why this new haunt is set to become the talk of the town! Neatly tucked away on Seel Street, Be At One is wonderfully modern, full of colour and well practiced at making delicious cocktails! The interior really impressed me with a gorgeous neon sign on the wall and an amazing terrace complete with coloured stools – it’s that little attention to detail that really makes a bar stand out in my book. But onto the main event – the drinks! I had a look at the rather extensive cocktail menu – I was spoilt for choice with daiquiri’s, pina colada’s and mojitos on the menu in every flavour you could wish! However I stuck to my guns and went with my current summer favourite – an aperol spritz. Delicious! Once I’d snapped away I sat on the terrace, taking in the colour …

Review // Santa Maluco, Castle Street, Liverpool

It was supposed to be a quiet, dull Wednesday evening…but then an invite to sample Santa Maluco – a stylish pizzeria and cocktail bar located on Castle Street landed in my inbox! Nestled firmly in the L1 postal code I was excited to see what the owners of Salt Dog Slims and Santa Chupitos had to offer! Arriving at the venue, I loved the classic black exterior that really invites you in! Knowing pizza and cocktails were on the menu, my guest and I were very excited to sample the goods on offer. After a very warm welcome we took our seats at the central bar and had a nosey at the menu. The premise is, you eat per slice. Rodizo style is the name of the game here and you are given your spinner which indicates when you want the pizza to keep on comin’, if you’re taking a break or ready to try the utterly delicious dessert pizza! Comfortably seated we enjoyed a complimentary aperol and processo cocktail which went down a treat …

Life // Liverpool Photo Diary

Last week I had an impromptu week off inbetween leaving my old job and starting a new job this week. So as I’d massively lucked out with the weather I decided to take full advantage of the heat, blue skies & sunshine and discover Liverpool.         I live about half an hours train ride outside the city and I’ll actually be working in Liverpool now so I thought I’d explore the docks and get snap happy whilst the sunshine was out!

OOTD // Summer Brights

As we all know blogging is a big business nowadays and I’m currently undergoing a bit of a career transition moving away from writing, so my blog is more of a creative outlet than ever before.  So I wanted to rebrand my site banner with pretty, colourful imagery and I set about this with a blog photoshoot. I have a bucket load of images to share so expect a couple more posts on this but I’m so happy with the images.  I chose an outfit that’s very me – bright & full of colour. And I’m ready to see what’s next for Ruth Writes!           What I’m wearing –  Cold-shoulder top – River Island Wide leg culottes – New Look Marble necklace – M&S Silver statement necklace – EBay Pink tote bag – Primark Cream clutch bag – Primark Sunglasses – RayBans Earrings – River Island

Life // The Sunday Edit

This week I finally reclaimed my social life after weeks of spending time at home.  Friday night I chucked together the leftover veggies I had in my fridge with some chicken and ended up making the most delicious enchalladas. Winner! Yesterday was date night and what a day it was! We started with a gin tasting experience I got the boy for his Xmas present. We tried 4 different gins each and they came with a choice of tonics and fruit delicious.  After cocktails at Alma de Cuba we made our reservation at Picallinos. 3 courses each and a generous helping of wine later, we were utterly stuffed. The mushroom bruchetta was so full of flavour and moreish. And his lobster looked and tasted amazing. One to remember for next time!  After such a lovely weekend I’m ready for a lazy Sunday and a new week to begin!

Food // A Trip to TGI Fridays

Last week we decided to treat ourselves to a school night trip to TGIs. Delicious American style food, huge portions and a lengthy cocktail menu – perfect! We visited the Liverpool branch based in the L1. We arrived at around half 8 and after a 10 minute wait at the bar, we were seated at our table. With hungry bellies we opted for a starter each before our main. The nachos and chicken wings were delicious and then I had the pulled pork burger whilst he opted for the steak, ribs and prawns combo. Safe to say we finished the lot!   It may be a chain but the food is delicious, which is just what you want!

Food: Lucho Libre Liverpool

On Saturday I paid a well overdue visit to Lucho Libre in Liverpool. A delicious tapas style Mexican restaurant tucked away just off Bold Street, it certainly didn’t fail to impress.    I was in the city for a catch up with one of my oldest friends and we decided to start the afternoon with food and a cocktail. Why not on the weekend, hey?    I opted for the sweet potato and chorizo quesadilla and a side of piggy piggy piggy fries. Yep named thrice, they were a delicious batch of sweet potato and normal fries topped with pulled pork – delicious!           We arrived at around 3ish and whilst every table was full, there was a chilled out atmosphere and the staff were really tentative, without being too much. Sometimes in restaurants I find you can be asked if everything’s ok a little too much and that’s when it can grate. But Licho Libre were fab.  All three of us had a main and a side dish and the bill was …

Gigs: The Showhawk Duo/ Death Row Diner

A couple of Fridays ago, after many months of waiting, the boy and I took the day off work to go watch The a Showhawk Duo, do their thing. They’re an acoustic, 2-man band who cover rock, jazz and best of all, 90s dance tracks. They were playing at the Bierkeller in Liverpool and it was quite simply, fab! The atmosphere was ace and they really got the crowd going – so much so the place was up out of their seats and stood on the benches dancing along! We decided to try out the Death Row Diner beforehand. A dark, moody atmosphere teamed with boozy cocktails and yummy food, perfect right? I went for the buttermilk fried chicken burger with sweet potato fries whilst the Mr had the sirloin steak. We really couldn’t fault the food. Great service too, with the waiters advising me when I couldn’t choose between a handful of different dishes! It was a great day and I would reccomend checking out both The Showhawk Duo and the Death Row Diner …
