One thing I love about being a blogger in Liverpool is the diversity in events and the opportunities that knock every once in a while. Known for its independent restaurants, great bars and diversity when it comes to dining; the introduction of a new organic food market on Bold Street was welcomed with open arms! Encouraging city dwellers and the average Joe give a vegetarian or vegan diet a go, the food market which opened recently is Liverpool’s answer to Whole Foods. Always one to stay ahead of the curve, Bold Street is the perfect location and when I received an invite to pop along to the launch night, how could I refuse! Complete with a fruit and veg market, deli counter, store cupboard aisles and even health and beauty products; all vegetarian and vegan friendly, the Liv Food Market is a welcome addition. Food // Giving up for Lent

I never really do anything for Lent. I always tell myself I’ll attempt to give something up but after a couple of days I give in and carry on as before. But after indulging a little too much lately, I thought it would be the much needed kick up the butt I need to give up unnecessary snacking until Easter. So, with this in mind I’ve decided to stop eating the oh so good but naughty stuff – aka chocolate, crisps and fizzy drinks. They’ve become an every other day occurrence so I’m gonna see if I can actually stick to it and stop for 40 days, 40 nights till Easter.    I’m also using my new so Instagrammable diary from My Little Box as a food diary to keep track of my meals. Home cooking each night is back on the agenda and I’m finding I really look forward to each meal more. September’s Challenge: Turning Pescetarian

The first of September marks a new month, the end of summer and the welcome return of autumn. This year I’ve set myself a couple of new challenges and thought, why should this month be any different? Having never ran before, I completed by first ever 5k for the Race for Life and I re-joined the gym too. This year I’ve really started to think about my health and mainly my weight. Having never really thought about it before, I mean I considered a full bottle of wine accompanying a batch of homemade sweet potato wedges on a Friday night in the perfect balance. And whilst I aint giving up on the wine anytime soon, I wanted to discover new recipes. I’ve really enjoyed trying new ingredients, discovering new recipes and expanding my cooking knowledge. My top 3 cookery books

Cooking is one of my favourite pastimes.Curling up after a long day in work with a stack of cookery books, sifting through the chapters choosing my meals for the week is such a great way to relax. We may be in June but I’m loving trying new soup recipes, salads and tasty veggie dishes. I blogged about my Salads for all Seasons cookery book last year but now the sun is finally making an appearance, it’s high time I got it back out again! Last week I had a week off work and it’s safe to say, I indulged. Almost Famous burgers which are just too tasty to resist, cocktails and snacks a-plenty. But I want to feel back to me. Forget massive weight loss goals, that’s not what I’m about. I just want to feel great – in and out. Yeah, it sounds cheesy buy hey, it’s what I’m going with! Foodies: Healthy Lunchbox Snacks

We are now half way through the year and the summer holidays are well under way. That said, I’m not one for crash diets and trying to lose weight in the quickest way possible or cutting out all my favorite things – I like carbs far too much! days. However, I’m quite laid back when it comes to my body image (read lazy) and would rather make small, yummy changes to my meals than starve for the sake of an instagram picture. I take my lunch to work each day as it stops me heading to the on-site canteen and indulging in chips and lots of other naughty but nice treats. I like to try and mix it up each day with salads, soup, wraps and bagels taking preference. I also like to round my lunch off properly with a packet of crips and some kind of snack bar. Healthier lifestyle

It’s been a while since I blogged about my plight to live a healthier lifestyle, so I thought Bank Holiday Monday is a good a time as any for an update. To be honest, I fell off the wagon. In spectacular fashion. So two weeks ago I began to reign it back in. Following SW without the added extras and I can report from this very morning, those seven pesky pounds are nearly gone. That said I loved the Easter roast yesterday, the dinner and drinks with my nearest and dearest on Saturday night and the two Easter eggs sat looking at me on my dressing table will be demolished very  soon, but I’m back on the ‘all in consideration’ way of thinking. This morning I took myself out for my first ever run outside, instead of on the treadmill. And you know what? It wasn’t that bad. I might have actually enjoyed it! So the plan is to eat less and move more. They say it’s that simple, so let’s put it in practise!

Bake Off: Chocolate Victoria sponge

If I knew you were coming I’d have baked a cake…Just as well I did then isn’t it! In a bid to get back on track with Slimming World after a couple of weeks of naughtiness, I’m reigning my snacking and syns in and starting again on the straight and narrow. But dieting doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom.Whilst I much prefer savoury to sweet, craving crisps and dibs and a huge ol’ glass of wine on the side come Friday night, every now and again it’s good to give in to chocolate cravings. So I baked a cake. But this was a cake with a difference. I substituted brown sugar for sweetener – Canderel. The lovely guys over at Canderel got in touch to see if I would be interested in putting the savour to the test and use it in a range of foods, other than a morning cuppa! Tasty Tortilla Pizza

Since the start of the year I’ve been following Slimming World. The first month I lost steadily, whilst the last few weeks have lead to a steady sustain, which is deserved after Valentines weekend and my Grandad’s 90th on Sunday. However I’ve found the perfect balance is just to incorporate it into your usual lifestyle, rather than treating it as a diet. Now I’m over two months in, I have figured out what works for me, how I can still allow myself treats, such as Friday wine and meals out, without overly rocking the scales. However, it’s nice to try new recipes and find yummy alternatives for my favourite foods. And, this week I gave tortilla pizza a go. Complete with my favourite toppings, it was delicious, yummy and didn’t fare too badly on the syn front either! Ingredients Tortilla Tomato puree or passata Low fat grated cheese Feta and smoked cheddar Green and yellow peppers Cherry tomatoes Simply load up, pop in the oven and you have a guilt-free dinner made in minutes!

Soup time: Carrot, Sweet Potato and Butternut Squash

I’ve spoken about my love for soup over here time and time again. Yummy, filling and super healthy, every Sunday I chuck a bunch of veggies together in a large pan with a stock cube and voila – my weekly lunches are done! This week I’m enjoying carrot, sweet potato and butternut squash. It’s quite a sweet mix so I’ve heavily seasoned with pepper and it’s good to go. What kind of soup are you enjoying at the minute? I’m always looking for new ideas!

Slimming World update – Week 3

I’m now three weeks into following the Slimming World plan. Ive decided to do it myself, attending the class to get weighed to ensure it’s accurate but skipping the group chats as I feel I’m doing well on my own. I decided to blog this to keep me on track and simply to highlight, it is that easy. I’ve still enjoyed desserts and alcohol, on moderation and within my syns. But upped my fruit and veg intake, cutting out snacks but enjoying meal prep and home cooking again. Three weeks in I’ve lost 5lbs. A nice slow but steady start. Showcasing it is a lifestyle change, not a quick fix. My friends, family and bf are really supportive and it hadn’t felt like too much of a transition. Hopefully this is just the start of a healthier me….

Cooking with coconut oil

In-keeping with my last few foodie related posts, I decided to blog a little more about my new holy grail essential in the kitchen – the groovy food company organic virgin coconut oil. I had been thinking for a while about investing in a pot of the good stuff but I just didn’t realise the full potential of its magical prowess…until now that is. I tend to use it when I’m frying or sauteing my food. Chicken, veggies, tuna steak, sweet potato – you name it and it just works. Without leaving a coconuty taste either, which I was kind of expecting. I told you I’m sold. I used it to fry a home marinated chicken breast earlier this week and it was just so good. I accompanied my chicken with a few leaves of iceberg lettice and one of those rice bags – perfect. Now, what else can I use it with?!

Wonderful winter salads

Salad, more often than not is deemed a summer dish. Great to be eaten in the sunshine, when it’s hot outside and it can be topped with a multitude of yummy meats, fish and cheeses. However, how many of us tend to dig into a big ol’ bowl of leaves,peppers and cherry toms post-September and particularly this close to Christmas? …Yeah, not many of us. But, in a bid to try and conquer the post-Christmas slump and party season bulge I have taken to mixing up my lunches with an array of coleslaws, pots of potato salad and lettice! I opted to grab a bag of Florette Salad on my last visit to the supermarket and it didn’t disappoint. Crisp and packed with flavour, its the perfect accompaniment to my lunch. I also noticed they do kale too so I plan to pick up a bag on my next trip so I can work it into my evening meals too! Daily diet changes

How is it September tomorrow already? The year seems to have flown by in a blur of holidays, sunshine, rain, festivals and…. food. Yup, my 2014 has sp far been ruled by my stomach. Gourmet festival grub, discovering new restaurants and cafes and revisiting old favourites. However the start of the new month brings the start of the new term and to many, it signals the start of a new year. However since being in full-time employment for the past for years, this seems to pass me by. But, no more. From tomorrow, I shall adopt the notion of the new year and apply it to my daily routine. Last month I started a new job in Manchester city centre and now day is spent communting to and from work and this has disrupted my routine. Having my alarm shout at me each morning to drag my sleep self outta bed means my mealtimes have taken to change too and little changes have become mandatory to keep hunger pangs at bay!
