Month: May 2016

Food // Bank Holiday Brunchin’

I love the end of May Bank Holiday as its my birthday weekend and this year the sun has got his hat on! To celebrate the long weekend I headed into Liverpool on Sunday to catch up with some friends, eat and enjoy a couple of drinks. We decided on TGI’s and as it was the weekend I decided to have cheesy nachos to start and stacked tortillas with Cajun chicken for my main. Plus a peachy cocktail, cos well, why not? We sat outside, enjoying the sunshine and after our meal headed over to the Tavern on the Green for a nice, cold cider in the sun – perfect Sunday to me!

Life // The Sunday Edit

So daily blogging kinda dropped off didn’t it? I tried but this month has been kinda crazy. I started a new job in Liverpool, which means I’m closer to home and I now work in blogger outreach, which mom enjoying so much! And I’ve spent this weekend celebrating my 28th birthday…I know, I know i don’t look a day over 25 (lies)! So I thought I’d bring you a ‘Life Lately’ kinda post instead! 1. Earlier in the week I fancied trying out a new recipe and following the news about Good Food, I tried a new veggie pasta bake – delicious! 2. I love having fresh flowers around the house? I think they just brighten up my kitchen windowsill! 3. Al fresco cocktails at the Goodness Gracious rooftop bar in the sunshine made my Saturday. Amazing views. 4. Followed by more cocktails at Tribeca and food at Ruth Writes – Neon Jamon review. Yep, again. I loved it so much last week, I went back with bae.

Food // Mexican Dinner Parties

So, we’ve lived in our house for 6 months now but up until this past weekend we haven’t properly had friends round…I know right? I think it’s cos most of our furniture is hand-me-down and we moved a bit further out than our home towns.  But on Saturday night, that all changed when I them out first dinner party and obvs there was only one thing in the menu – Mexican!!       I love cooking Mexican food as its easy, full of flavour and great for sharing with friends. Plus I got to use my new tapas dishes to hold the all important cheese, sour cream and spicy rice.  Ok, our dinner table as not to our taste at all but I really enjoyed cooking for two of our friends and just sitting around the table chatting, drinking and working our way through chicken fajitas.  Now to plan my next one…

Beauty // The Body Shop Blogger Event, Liverpool

On Thursday I was invited down to The Body Shop store in L1 to attend their bloggers evening. The Body Shop is one of those brands I’ve grown up with and associate with being a teenager, thanks to their vanilla musk range. But as the brand has grown their products have massively improved.. On the night they had 3 stations set up – a face / skincare station, body and hand care station and a makeover station. I beelined for the facial station as my skin needed some TLC! I’ve always been an avid cleanse, tone, moisturise kinda girl but thanks to long days at work, sometimes k forget. I was introduced to the Vitamin E range which works perfect with my skin type – oily, if you’re wondering and it targets aging too. I didn’t bother with a makeover as it was so nice to feel cleansed so I headed home after the event make up free! I also had a nosey at the Pinita Colada range that I’ve seen across various blogs. I …

Food // Neon Jamon, Smithdown Place, Liverpool

Neon Jamon wasn’t on my radar until I moved closer to Liverpool but since then I’d heard nothing but ravd reviews. So earlier this week, along with a group of friends, I went along to see what the fuss was about! I went with 4 friends and we were very hungry indeed, which is why we ended up ordering 15 dishes! The menu provided so much choice but a handful of my favourites had to be the cheese croquettes, mushrooms, potatas bravas and the mini burgers. It was fantastic value for money and we had a great time – chatting, catching up and working our way through the different dishes we ordered!

Food // Bakchick, Bold Street, Liverpool

Bakchich is one of those restaurants that you visit often but always forget how much you love it. I called in last week as I wanted to grab something to eat somewhere fairy inexpensive and where I happily eat alone – with minimal embarrassment about being a solo diner. And, it was mission accomplished!

Fashion // Jewellery Love

I’ve always been an accessories kinda girl. In my teens it was bags, now in my late twenties it’s bags and jewellery.       Across the body bags that double up as a clutch are my evening go-to and this one is pretty darn easy to wear. In summer I love to go bright with my clothes so my jewellery is quite muted.  Black, silver and rose gold tones are my go-to’s.  What I’m wearing –  Across body bag – Primark Ring – ASOS Rose gold bracelet – Micheal Kors

Life // Liverpool Photo Diary

Last week I had an impromptu week off inbetween leaving my old job and starting a new job this week. So as I’d massively lucked out with the weather I decided to take full advantage of the heat, blue skies & sunshine and discover Liverpool.         I live about half an hours train ride outside the city and I’ll actually be working in Liverpool now so I thought I’d explore the docks and get snap happy whilst the sunshine was out!

OOTD // Summer Brights

As we all know blogging is a big business nowadays and I’m currently undergoing a bit of a career transition moving away from writing, so my blog is more of a creative outlet than ever before.  So I wanted to rebrand my site banner with pretty, colourful imagery and I set about this with a blog photoshoot. I have a bucket load of images to share so expect a couple more posts on this but I’m so happy with the images.  I chose an outfit that’s very me – bright & full of colour. And I’m ready to see what’s next for Ruth Writes!           What I’m wearing –  Cold-shoulder top – River Island Wide leg culottes – New Look Marble necklace – M&S Silver statement necklace – EBay Pink tote bag – Primark Cream clutch bag – Primark Sunglasses – RayBans Earrings – River Island

Beauty // Lipstick Haul

If you know me IRL or you’re a long-time reader of my blog, you’ll know I’m a lipstick addict. Erry’day I’m rocking either a bold or a nude lip, so I decided to put my favourites together in a pretty lipstick haul for y’all.         I’m a huge fan of Maybelline Baby Lips. They feel so lovely to wear and they’re really pigmented so you get lots of colour with every wear. So naturally I had to feature two in today’s post.  Next up is a surprise entry – a gloss lip balm from Aldi! I love Aldi and really look forwardto our   weekly shop and checking out the star buys. I picked up one of the lip balms in a warm, peachy shade and I just love it. I feels really nice to wear and the colour is so long-lasting.  Thirdly, I wanna talk about a Nivea lip balm real quick.  Now the weathers (trying) to heat up I need to start taking care of my lips and this is the answer. …

Food // What I Eat in a Day

I’ve wanted to do one of these posts for a while but my meals vary from day to day. I blogged this from a day earlier this week when I was off work.  At home I tend to eat a lot better / healthier as there’s less distractions and I don’t find myself craving chocolate either.  So here it is – what I ate in a day!  Breakfast – I ate breakfast at 10am after doing a workout on YouTube. I wanted something quick so I went for a bowl of plain Special K with a sliced nectarine and semi-skimmed milk. And a glass of water as I was knackered after exercising!     Lunch – 1pm and I was ready for lunch. I try to follow the Slimming World diet where I can and I’ve seen lots of Instagram followers rave about these thins. So I had 2 thins filled with red pepper hummus, smoked ham, lettuce & a smidge of mayo. Sour cream wholemeal crisps are my favourite so I had a packet and …

OOTD // How I Style Midi Dresses

Another day, another outfit post. I think I’m doing quite well in attempting to mould my boyfriend into an ‘Instagram Husband’ as he snapped these pictures on Sunday afternoon in the garden. However please forgive the fact I’ve got my hair up – I was *mildly* hungover when these were taken…    The weather was absolutely gorgeous so I decided to throw on this really, really old midi dress. I love the shape and it’s really lightweight making it perfect for work or just running errands – like we did on Sunday!  Midi dress – River Island Kimono – Primark Necklace – EBay Lace up sandals – Missguided

Homeware // Introducing Lobster Homeware

Lobster Homeware have been on my radar for a while now as they’re a new homeware brand who feature an iconic lobster print. Longtime readers of my blog will now that I’m quite into cookery and enjoy rustling up new creations in the kitchen. And what do you need when you’re creating mess? A new apron! I was very kindly sent one of the Lobster aprons to sample and I’m impressed! I chose the beautiful yellow colour as I love to try and brighten up my kitchen where I can! The quality is truly excellent and I love the personal touches – such as embossed fabric bag it arrived in and the cute swing tags! The print is really sweet and I was thrilled to find it had oven gloves attached too. This is a weird sentence to write but I’m a fan of oven gloves! I just don’t get those of you out there who use tea towels – madness! It has really nice Lobster tags on the pockets and it’s just a lovely …

Life // Feeling The Blogger Pressure

Part and parcel of being a blogger these days is prep. When I first started reading blog posts they were diary-style entries with the majority of images taken on the bloggers’ phone. Outfit shots snapped in the mirror and product images taken wherever. But now, we’re dealing with a whole different ball game.    Just 6 years down the line, this little blog has undertaken a couple of re-brands including a name change (does anyone remember Musings of Ruby?!) and now blogging is big business. And this is where the pressure comes in. Writing up the post, taking perfect images to accompany, sharing across social media. Blogging is such a big business with so many of us creating amazing content – the pressure to get your blog to rank, grow and generate comments can sometimes make you wonder if it’s all worth it. I’ve said before that I don’t write to turn this into my career. I blog as I used to work as a Copywriter, but since taking a step away from Content and …

Reality // Weight-Loss Diaries

I rarely blog about my weight as I often feel a bit daft and try to keep it as private as possible. But seeing as I blog about food so much I just wanted to write a diary entry style post today about my attitude to weight loss and dieting in general.  I think I still think in my head that I’m bigger than I am. During my time at university 2006-2010 I steadily gained weight thanks to a bad diet that consisted of pints of cider, pasta for every meal and takeaways about 3/4 times a week – after a night out.  I felt concious of my size but I still dressed how I did before I gained the weight. Once I’d moved back home it was time to change. When I compare the two blocks of images below, I can see a physical difference in my shape and my face. But in my head, and when I look in the mirror, I’m still that girl. I still beat myself up over food, I …
